symbolism quotes

Quote 1: “- and the last scrawl from above formed what, to me, appeared an odd, yet familiar, shape. A signature.”

Quote 2: ” They fall on top of each other. The scribbled signature black, onto the blinding global white, onto thick soupy red.

Quote 3: “First up is something white. Of the blinding kind.”

Quote 4: “Next is a signature black, to show the poles of my versatility, if you like.”

Quote 5: “The last time I saw her was red.”

The book thief paragraph – pg 3 – 15

“First the colours. Then the humans. That’s usually how I see things. Or at least how I try.” Here, at the start of the book, this is deaths (the narrators) way of telling us that colours are going to be of great significance throughout the book. The prologue was broken into three parts, and the first sentence of each of these starts with a colour. “First up is something white. Of the blinding kind.” “Next is a signature black, to show the poles of my versatility, if you like.” “The last time I saw her was red.” Red, White and Black are some of the colours typically associated with Nazi Germany because they are the colours of the swastica. The fact that these colours are placed where they are in the book related leads us to believe that all of the deaths that death saw ‘the book thief’ near were elated to the Nazis. “- and the last scrawl from above formed what, to me, appeared an odd, yet familiar, shape. A signature.” Death recognising the signature (swastica) showed that even at the early stages of the war there had already been a lot of Nazi-related deaths. Death tries not to get involved with human life, he just goes about his job. He also doesn’t see death as a good or bad thing. In fact, I don’t think he has a concept of what is good or bad. I think he doesn’t know about the Nazis yet because he just doesn’t get involved. Neutrality

The Book thief pg 3 – 15

Quote 1: “- and the last scrawl from above formed what, to me, appeared an odd, yet familiar, shape. A signature.”

Quote 2: ” They fall on top of each other. The scribbled signature black, onto the blinding global white, onto thick soupy red.

When I read these pages of the book thief, Quote 1 and Quote 2 seemed to related to each other. I found this interesting because it was identified as a signature rather than the nazi symbol. I think the narrator, who we think is death doesn’t know who the Nazi’s are yet, however, there are still hints of war brewing and fighter planes.

The first lines of each part of the prologue also include the colours red black and white.

“First up is something white. Of the blinding kind.”

“Next is a signature black, to show the poles of my versatility, if you like.”

“The last time I saw her was red.”

Thousands of years ago, the swastika was seen as a symbol of good fortune and luck and well being. It became ingrained as part of the Nazi symbolism by hitler.

Maybe the fact that it used to mean good fortune has something to do with death.

CMIYC – film essay

Describe a place or time where a main character felt very comfortable or uncomfortable in the text. Explain how visual and/or oral language features helped you to understand the character’s reaction(s).

The film Catch Me If you Can directed by Steven Spielberg conveys the idea of how family affects and influences you growing up. Most of the world perceive family as being the rock that you can fall back on, that are there for you no matter what, but the reality of Franks family is quite different. At the start of the film, a place where Frank ( the protagonist) felt very comfortable was at his home with both his parents on Christmas day. Throughout the whole movie, Frank’s idea of a perfect family seems very unrealistic, and this scene shows the happy false reality that that comes from. It shows us an insight into the false atmosphere of Christmas, that Frank sees to be his usual family atmosphere. Today I will be outlining three key film techniques that show us Frank is comfortable in this place: The first of these is the lighting, the second of these is the soundtrack, and thirdly the dialogue.

Steven Spielberg uses lighting to help us to see that Frank is very happy and comfortable at home, at the start of the film. He is surrounded by his family and they are all part of a cheery, almost false reality. The soft glow that the lighting used gives the characters is used to make them look happy and comfortable, but at the same time falsely cheery. This relates to Franks fixation in his mind that his family is always the same as the cheery ‘perfect family’ they become at Christmas. In real life, Christmas is seen as a big event where everyone comes together and they are all happy, and everyone is suddenly best friends, but I see that as false because Christmas is the one day of the year that this is a reality. For the rest of the year, there are problems between people in a family because that is why we have a family to support, challenge and help grow together as good people. What Frank doesn’t know is that there is no such thing as a perfect family. The overall moods given by the lighting in this scene can be described as soft, romantic and unrealistic. Spielberg used lighting with a slightly yellowish tint in this scene. The colour yellow can be associated with all of the moods shown above. Yellow has a general feeling of warmth that surrounds us, and when a light is really yellow it can look static and we perceive everything to look better than it actually does. A place most people find comfort in is often filled with warmth and love because they can be themselves and feel completely secure.

Christmas music has associations to happiness and joy all over the world. In Catch Me If You Can, Christmas music is a common soundtrack that accompanies Frank every Christmas. Need to rewatch this scene because I cant remember if it is christmas music or just calm, happy, successful music.

Spielberg uses lots of film techniques to convey the idea that family greatly affects and influences you growing up. Frank felt comfortable at home at christmas time when his family was still together. We know christmas is a time that family comes together, and it is the one time of year where we have to be ‘friendly’ towards everyone in our family. Frank

Speech Mango lassi

Good afternoon.

Who here has been to Bombay palace or the spice room?

As you probably know these two Indian restaurants both serve mango lassis. And I’m sure you also find them delicious.

Today I will be talking you through the steps of making a mango lassi by yourself at home. I love Bombay palace, but I have run into a problem. Mango lassis are expensive, 7 dollars for just a little bit of smoothie. And they are so good that you finish it within like 2 minutes and then you have to stop yourself from ordering more because before you know it you could be spending 14, 21 or 28 dollars on mango lassis alone. And that’s only before your meal arrives.

Once again I am here today to demonstrate how to make a simple mango lassi at home. Although knowing how to make one won’t necessarily cut down the costs of your next Bombay palace trip, it will help you to enjoy the delicious taste at home.

The mango lassi that I will be demonstrating today is so simple that you only need 5 ingredients. And 3 or 4 of them are probably already at your house!

To make a mango lassi you will need:

1 cup of frozen mango – this depends on the season. If it is mango season, you can use 1 cup of chopped up mango instead. Frozen mango is available at New World for about 10 dollars. This may seem like a lot, but one bag makes a lot of smoothies.

½ cup of milk – cow milk is usually used, but coconut milk is also an option.

About 4 teaspoons of honey, or sugar. – depends on how sweet you like your mango lassi.

1 cup of plain yoghurt – this can be sweetened or unsweetened, bear in mind this will affect how much sugar you use.

Some ground cardamom – this is optional but I would recommend it as it makes the mango lassi take less like a mango smoothie.

Mangos first originated in Asia. They quickly spread into the rest of the world quickly becoming the worlds most popular fruit. The mango lassi has a lot of health benefits including being rich in vitamins and high in fibre. They also boost your immune system and help with digestion.

Just a wee tip for you, when you are making a lassi when mango is out of season, DO NOT USE CANNED MANGO! I have tried this before, and the result is a mess. There is so much fibre in it, that it just doesn’t go down right.

Once you have added all of the ingredients to your blender, you will need to blend it. this should take about 20 to 30 seconds, so step back and keep watching it in case something happens to the blender. It is not impossible for it to spill over and make a mess.

Now you have you tasty as mango lassi, packed with vitamins and fibre to help you stay healthy so you can get on top of all the work you have to do. If you have made mango lassi for a party you can make them look nice by putting them in a nice cup and adding one of those party drink umbrellas. Hopefully, after watching this demonstration you will feel comfortable making your own mango lassi at home and can enjoy the great taste without having to spend a lot of money. I hope you have been encouraged to become a mango lassi addict like me.

The need to call her, to contact her, to be with her is too strong. Ever since I left for sailing camp the thought of calling Alyssa has been on a constant loop in my mind, building speed like the trains that pull out of Grand Central Station. So much could change if I make the call. I mean she might decline or hang up as soon as she hears my voice, but if she didn’t; we could fix things. Our special bond, our family, and David, who I still haven’t spoken to since he broke my sister’s heart. Everything is on the line here. If this goes wrong I may as well just give up all hope of ever being family to her again. It’s worth a shot though, right?

You know what, screw it! I’m done wondering. I need to show her that I do care. Ever so much. She is the most important person to me in the whole world, and my love for her is everlasting. I’ll go now. Go to the dorm mistresses office, rap my knuckles on her hard polished oakwood door and enter with an air of authority. When she opens it I’ll tentatively ask for my cellphone. ‘One call a day.’ she’ll tell me and I’ll just slowly nod my head as I back away. But what if after all of that she just declines my call. The waterworks might start, and then I’d be the laughing stock of sailing camp and she would never know. That’s the heartbreaking thing; I know she cares. Deep down we still have our connection. The thing that whether we like it or not will keep us bound together until death. The blood that runs thicker than tar.

My feet, however, don’t seem to correspond with my brain. They feel awfully heavy as I drag my legs off my batman bed and slowly make my way towards the door. I need to change those sheets, they’re much too little boyish for me. After all, Lyss and I are nearly 16. Only a few months until we can drive. In New Zealand being 16 means you’re ‘legal’, whatever that means, so I guess there’ll be that too.

The unwieldy metal door of our bunkroom slams shut behind me. Its rubber lining squeaking as it connects with the soundproof strip inside the door frame. Footsteps echo out across the silent hallway, the soft patter of my worn-out trainers. The building is deserted, the rest of the kids attending this camp are either tucked up in their rooms, studying or more likely watching Netflix. I make my way out into the courtyard. A handful of students are gathered around the shed cleaning their gear from earlier today. My wetsuit and boat shoes have already been rinsed and are hung up on the camp washing line, so now is technically my free time.

The dorm mistresses office door stands, waiting, only two meters ahead. My feet stop in front of it, sensing a lack of motivation from me. “Come on!” I whisper to myself. This is so ridiculous. Alyssa doesn’t want to talk to me. “No! You can do this”. I take a long deep breath filling my lungs up with as much air and as much courage as possible. Raising my trembling fist, I rap on the solid oak door.

Goldilocks

Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Goldilocks. She went for a walk in the forest. Pretty soon, she came upon a house. She knocked and, when no one answered, she walked right in.

At the table in the kitchen, there were three bowls of porridge. Goldilocks was hungry. The porridge looked so good. She knew that there was probably someone waiting to eat this porridge but it looked so good. So, ignoring her thoughts, she tasted the porridge from the first bowl.

“This porridge is too hot!” she exclaimed. It burnt her tongue. Her stomach growled, she was still so hungry. No, you can’t a little voice in her head advised. Oh shut

So, she tasted the porridge from the second bowl.
